But yesterday, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was finally able to wrestle some of the focus away from Griffin with his performance against the Carolina Panthers. He broke the single-game record for most passing yards thrown by a rookie quarterback (433) in the Colts' 23-20 win.
Despite the belated praise, Luck is putting together the best season of any rookie quarterback this season, and perhaps all-time.
Here's why.
He's a winner.
The Indianapolis Colts had limited playoff aspirations entering the season, but now they're right in the thick of the race. Luck has the team sitting pretty at 5-3 at the midpoint of the season, which is tied for the third-best record in the AFC.
The other rookie quarterbacks have provided their teams with a boost, but nothing like what Luck has provided for the Colts, who were 2-14 a season ago.
He's clutch.
Luck has four game-winning drives and two-fourth quarter comebacks through eight games. One of those wins came when the Colts stunned the Packers early last month.
Luck outplayed Aaron Rodgers in that game, throwing for 362 yards on 31-of-55 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. The Colts scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a 13-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Luck touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne late in fourth quarter to beat the Packers 30-27.
He's making history.
Luck broke the single-game rookie passing record yesterday, and has more records in his sights. He's on pace for 4,880 yards, which would shatter the previous rookie passing record (4,051) set by Cam Newton last season.
Luck is 190-of-336 for 2,440 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions so far this season.
